City carpets;
Numerous cities in Iran are well known for the production of magnificent carpets with ornate designs and magnificent colour combinations. Such carpets were first created by the order of royals and elite to add to their luxurious lifestyle.
Many city rugs are created by masters who either designed the rug or employed designers to create the pattern to be woven. The masters are often people with knowledge and taste who supervise and determine the process of weaving from beginning to the end. They decide on the accuracy of the pattern, put together the right material which are best suited for the project and supervise and oversee the process of weaving that sometimes take years to complete.
Every city carpet is a work of a teamwork in which many artists and craftsmen are involved; the people who hand spin wool, Dyeing masters who dye the wool with natural or other materials, a designer who creates the pattern, a draftsman who translates the design into a pixelated pattern in which every square represents a knot and master weavers who spend months and years to tie one knot after another all directed by the master who leads the team.
The tradition has such deep roots in many cities in Iran that, very often, members of a family join as a team to create a rug on the loom that they have in their home, doing everything within themselves. Each family freely decides on designs and colours based on traditions and their creativity.
